A Noun is the name of a person, place or thing.

or

Name of anything is noun.

For example:

Sita is a nurse.

Ravi lives in Mumbai.

The honesty is super policy.

In above examples Sita and Ravi are name of persons, Mumbai is name of a place and Honesty is name of thing.

So, they are Nouns.

Other examples:

Pen, Table, Water, Gold, Silver, Kindness, India, Country, State etc.

Classification of Noun:

Noun is classified in 5 categories:

  1. Proper Noun
  2. Common Noun
  3. Collective Noun
  4. Material Noun
  5. Abstract Noun

1. Proper Noun: Name of a particular person, place or thing is called Proper Noun.

Examples:
Ravi, Shyam, Rashmi, Harikesh, Abhishek, Holi, X-mas, January, February, Sunday, Monday, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Agra, Delhi, Hindu, Sikh, Mathematics, Rasian, German etc.

2. Common Noun: Common Noun refers to the common class of anything. It does not refer to some particular person, place or thing.

For example: Boy is class of all types of boys. So Boy is Common Noun.

India is the name of a particular country so it is Proper Noun but Country is Common Noun as it refers to all countries.

Agra is name of particular city so it is Proper Noun but City is Common Noun as it refers to all cities.

Other examples: Chair, Table, Dog, Book etc.

3. Collective Noun: A Collective Noun refers to a group of same type of things. The entire group is considered as one.

For example: Class, Police, Army, Bunch, Team etc.

Police is group of many policemen.

Class is group  of students.

Army is group of soldiers etc.

4. Material Noun: Material noun refers to the name of substances or materials that can not be counted. They can be weighed or measured.

For example: Water, Oil, Butter, Iron, Silver etc.

Need to keep in mind that iron is Material noun but thing made of iron (like bicycle, knife, pans etc) are common noun.

5. Abstract Noun:

The things that we can not see or touch physically, rather we can only think of them, are know Abstract Noun. These are virtual things.

Examples:
Poverty, Kindness, Darkness, Happiness, Wisdom, Sweetness etc.

Abstract noun does not have plural forms. Articles (A, An or the) are not used before abstract noun.

All actions are Abstract noun.
All science and arts are Abstract noun.
All languages are abstract noun.
All diseases are abstract noun.

Examples:
Actions: eating, weeping, drinking, sleeping, writing etc.
Science: Physics, Geometry, Chemistry, Painting (art) etc.
Languages: Japanese, Chinese, Hindi etc.
Diseases: Cholera, stomach ache, backpain etc.
