Notice given sentences:

Ravi is a good boy. => He is intelligent.

Sweta is my friend. => She is a doctor.

This is a pen. => It is red.

There are 12 parrots on the tree. => They are chattering.

If you notice He, She, It, and They in above sentences, all of them are used in place of some Noun.

He is used in place of Ravi.

She is used in place of Sweta.

It is used in place of This.

He, She, It and They are Pronouns.

Definition: Pronoun is a word which is used in place of Noun.

Why do we need pronouns? To make sentences beautiful and to avoid repetition, we use Pronoun.

See given sentence:

Ravi is a boy. Ravi is intelligent. Ravi’s brother is an engineer.

In above sentence, Ravi is repeated many times that does not sound good. To avoid this repetition we use Pronoun. For example, see below same sentence:

Ravi is a boy. He is intelligent. His brother is an engineer.

Yo can see in above sentence, He and His replaced Ravi and Ravi’s, hence sentence looks more beautiful.

Classification of Pronoun:

We can classify Pronouns in following types:

  1. Personal Pronoun
  2. Reflexive Pronoun
  3. Emphatic Pronoun
  4. Possessive Pronoun
  5. Demonstrative Pronoun
  6. Interrogative Pronoun
  7. Relative Pronoun
  8. Indefinite Pronoun
  9. Distributive Pronoun
  10. Reciprocal Pronoun
